Biratnagar: CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has asserted that Nepal cannot return to a regressive system, emphasizing that the republican system represents progress and enlightenment for the country. He said the Nepali people will not move backward into what he described as the "darkness" of past political regimes.
Inaugurating the 10th National Conference of Press Chautari Nepal in Biratnagar on Sunday, Pokhrel stated that the current government—formed through an alliance of two major political parties—is working in the interest of the people. According to him, the coalition aims to ensure political stability and address pressing national issues. He described the current government as powerful and capable of providing a much-needed political outlet for the country.
Reflecting on Nepal's political history, Pokhrel noted that during the one-party Panchayat era, citizens were deprived of their fundamental rights. He argued that Nepal has since made significant strides in nation-building, with progress seen in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, drinking water supply, and other basic services.
Addressing journalists at the event, Pokhrel urged them to base their reporting on facts. He stressed that while democracy guarantees freedom of the press, it does not excuse wrongdoing. He warned that if Nepal's democratic system were to face a crisis, it would ultimately harm the citizens.
